UK Number Plate Rules

UK number plates follow a standardised format introduced in September 2001. The format is AA00 AAA:

  • First 2 letters — DVLA local memory tag (e.g., LA–LY = London)
  • 2 digits — Year identifier (e.g., 23 = March–August 2023, 73 = September 2023–February 2024)
  • Last 3 letters — Random sequence

Front plates must be white; rear plates must be yellow. Both use black characters in the specified font. Since 2021, new UK plates must include a GB identifier within the blue strip on the left.

European Plate Differences

All EU member states standardised their plates to include the blue EU badge on the left, showing the country code (D for Germany, F for France, NL for Netherlands, etc.) and 12 gold stars. Within this standard, each country uses its own registration format:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a custom license plate online?

Select a plate style (UK, USA, Germany, France, etc.), type your text in the input, and the preview updates instantly. Click 'Download PNG' to save the image. No account or sign-up required.

What is the UK number plate format?

UK plates use the format AA00 AAA — two area letters, two year digits, then three random letters (e.g., AB12 CDE). Front plates are white; rear plates are yellow. Both use black text in a specific font (similar to Charles Wright).

What format do German license plates use?

German plates (Kraftfahrzeugkennzeichen) start with a city/district abbreviation (1–3 letters), then 1–2 letters and 1–4 digits — e.g., 'B AB 1234' for Berlin or 'M XY 999' for Munich. The EU blue badge on the left shows the country code D.

What do the colors mean on UK number plates?

White front plates and yellow rear plates are the UK legal standard. The color difference helps police quickly identify which direction a car is facing in CCTV footage. All new plates must also include a GB identifier within the blue EU-style strip.

What is the format of French number plates?

French plates (SIV system, introduced 2009) use the format AB-123-CD — two letters, three digits, two letters — assigned nationally rather than by region. An optional regional sticker on the right shows the department number and local coat of arms.

Can I use the generated plate image?

Yes, for personal, creative, or educational use — YouTube videos, design mockups, gifts, props, or fan art. Generated plates must not be used to misrepresent a real vehicle or for any illegal purpose.
